Bicycling Statistics

The bicycle share in Denmark is 19 % which is the second highest in Europe. After the war cycling dropped to half of the previous level, but since the 1970′ies cycling has increased in mainly the major cities. The bigger a city is the higher share cycling has of the total journeys. Danes have 3 journeys each day each person. Each cycle trip in the larger cities is in average around 3 kilometres.

 

Bicycle ownership is in average 0.83 bicycles each. Each year 67,000 bicycles are reported stolen

 

During the last decade cycling safety in Denmark has been improved. The number of bicycle fatalities dropped from 65 in 1997 down to 31 in 2006. 55 % were at least 60 years old. 68 % of the fatalities happened inside the urban area and 42 % happened in a junction.

 

5 % of all cyclists use a helmet while around 40 % of cyclists up till 10 years are wearing helmets.
