The Municipality of Middelfart can boast of having the most modern type of lighting: The lights turn themselves on when a cyclist or pedestrian comes by, and then turns itself down low again.

The new lighting system has been established along two cycle routes in Middelfart:

“We are talking about the most modern full-scale facilities in Demark. It’s safe to say that this is the future of lighting on paths and in housing estates,” says Niels Bebe, chairman of the Technical and Environmental Committee in Middelfart.

The lights are constantly on 10 % lighting to ensure a sense of a security as you can see ahead. When a cyclist or pedestrian approaches, the closest lights are turned up so the person can find his or her way. By only activating the lights when necessary you can save a lot on the electricity bill. But as Niels Bebe points out, this also means less wear and tear on the installations.
