At the time of writing, the international cycle conference Velo-City 2011 is opening in Seville.
Last night, the Mayor of Seville was welcoming the opening speaker of the conference, Gro Harlem Brundtland – President of the United Nations Commission on the Environment and Development and world-known for the report Our Common Future. The report, better known as the Brundtland report, was published in 1987 and was agenda setting in the field of sustainable development.
In a conversation with the Cycling Embassy of Denmark last night in Seville, Gro Harlem Brundtland pointed at the bike as part of the solution when addressing the environmental and climate challenges in the world:
“Cycling is a sustainable means of transport. A bike does not pollute, and bikes do not demand energy in a way that exhausts the resources of the earth.”, said the former Prime Minister of Norway. Furthermore, she noticed that “Copenhagen are way ahead of Oslo in the field of cycling.”
