Making Cycling Irresistible
John Pucher and Ralph Buehler published in July 2008 a paper showing how the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany have made bicycling a safe, convenient, and practical way to get around their cities. The paper shows among other things that the establishment of separate cycling facilities – cycling paths – along roads and at intersections, combined with traffic calming are ways to achieve higher levels of cycling. Furthermore extensive bike parking, integration with public transport, comprehensive traffic education, promotional cycling events generates enthusiasm and wide public support.
